The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Wednesday continued their military operations against Islamic State’s (ISIS) extremists in the city of Raqqa, northeastern Syria.

Supported by the US-led coalition’s air cover, the SDF entered the al-Barid district in Raqqa and pushed ISIS out of one of the group’s strategic buildings in the district.

“Fighters of the SDF took control of the al-Razi school building in al-Barid district on Wednesday. The building was used by ISIS terrorists as a weapons storage centre,” SDF officer Habun Osman told ARA News at the frontline.

The Syrian Democratic Forces seized a large deal of ammunition and weapons after expelling ISIS radicals from the building.

“A large part of al-Barid district is now under our control. The terrorists are hiding inside residential buildings in the area,” the SDF officer said, adding that sporadic clashes continued in the district until the midnight on Wednesday.

This comes just two days after the Kurdish-led SDF seized control of the Science Collage building of Raqqa University –which was used by ISIS as a security centre.

Meanwhile, clashes continued between the SDF and ISIS in the neighbourhoods of Hatin in western Raqqa and Sinaa east of the city.

The Kurdish-led forces have already captured three neighbourhoods in the city of Raqqa since the launch of a major operation to liberate the city a few days ago.

On Sunday, the SDF liberated the al-Romaniya neighbourhood after clashes with ISIS.

On Friday, the US-backed SDF units took control of the Sabahiya district in the western part of Raqqa city. Also on Friday, the Syrian Democratic Forces imposed a siege on the ISIS-held Raqqa Grain Silos in the northern part of the city, amidst ongoing clashes.

On Wednesday, the Syrian Democratic Forces expelled ISIS from the Mashlab neighbourhood in the eastern part of Raqqa.

This comes after the US-backed SDF troops launched a major operation to liberate the city of Raqqa from ISIS radicals. On Tuesday, the SDF announced the official start of the operation to capture Raqqa.

Raqqa has been known as a de facto capital for the ISIS self-proclaimed Caliphate since the summer of 2014.
