Talal Silo, the official spokesperson of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), told ARA News on Monday that the city of Tabqa is almost liberated from Islamic State’s (ISIS) jihadists, after the SDF took control of the old city of Tabqa.

According to Silo, it’s only a matter of hours before the SDF forces fully liberate the strategic city–which located near the ISIS de facto capital of Raqqa.

“There are still 2 to 3 neighbourhoods and the dam left. Right now clashes [between SDF and ISIS] are going on inside the neighbourhoods of Tabqa,” he said.

“We think today or tomorrow the neighborhoods will be liberated and then it will be officially announced, then only the dam will be left,” the SDF official spokesman told ARA News.

“Daesh [ISIS] defensives are collapsing in Tabqa. And SDF are advancing every hour towards a total liberation,” said Jesper Söder, a Swedish volunteer with the SDF said.

Speaking to ARA News, the SDF official Dr Nasr Haj Mansour said that the Tabqa city has not been completely liberated yet.

“Only the old city of Tabqa and one of the few neighbourshoods were liberated on Monday, but still there are two neighbourhoods and the body of the dam,” he said.

The dam itself is also almost liberated, only the control-room and the turbines are still under ISIS control.

The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces launched the operation to take Tabqa on March 21. Approximately 90% of the city has been liberated from ISIS so far.
