The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) yesterday night entered the strategic town of Tabqa in Raqqa province for the first time, killing at least 16 ISIS fighters and advancing 1.5 kilometres towards ISIS de facto capital of Raqqa City.

“The SDF stormed the city of Al-Tabqa and entered the eastern and western neighborhoods. 16 ISIS terrorists are reported dead in Tabqa,” said Jesper Söder, a Swedish volunteer with the SDF.

“The SDF, with the help of coalition air support, managed to take control of Tabqa during the night’s operations,” he added.

The SDF forces managed to enter the neighbourhoods in Tabqa from the east and west, seizing a large quantity of weapons and ammunition after expelling ISIS from the city.

On the other hand, two SDF fighters were killed during clashes with ISIS in Tabqa, local sources confirmed. Moreover, one civilian was killed by a mine explosion.

Meanwhile, heavy clashes continued between the SDF forces and ISIS militants in the countryside of Raqqa.

A US-led coalition spokesperson denied allegations that there were civilian casualties in Tabqa.

“@OIRSpox has seen reporting of Coalition casualties around Tabqa, Syria…we don’t have any operational reporting on this…at all,” Air Force Col John L. Dorrian Spokesman said on Saturday.
