Six killed in twin suicide bombings south of Damascus

Damascus, Syria – At least six people were killed and dozens injured Monday evening in a twin car bomb attack at the entrance of the city of Sayeda Zainab, south of Damascus.

The city of Sayeda Zainab is a destination for Shiites from Lebanon, Iraq and Iran, as the city contains the shrine of Zainab, daughter of first Shia Imam Ali.

Syrian state media accused anti-Assad rebels of being behind the bombing. However, none of the armed opposition factions announced responsibility for the operation.

“All victims were Syrians,” an eyewitness said, emphasizing there were no foreigners among the victims –although Shiite militias from Iraq and Lebanese gunmen of Hezbollah were present in the city under the pretext of protecting Zainab’s shrine.
