Syria Kurds to back Iraqi Kurdistan’s Peshmerga against ISIL

Kobane, Syria – The General Command of the Kurdish Popular Protection Units (YPG) released a statement yesterday announcing its full readiness to support the Peshmerga forces in Iraqi Kurdistan against al-Qaeda splinter group of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

“The attacks which targeted the headquarters of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in each of Khanaqin, Jalula and Tozkhormato, in addition to the last ISIL-led attack on the city of Mosul in northern Iraq, are considered an attack against all Kurds,” the YPG General Command said. “ISIL group aims to attack all the gains achieved by the Kurdish people after thousands of martyrs.”

“We (YPG) have faced and are facing this fundamental group and its extremists for nearly one year and we have warned of their objectives and hidden agendas,” the statement read, pointing out that YPG forces have gained remarkable experience in how to deal with ISIL group during battles and understood the group’s military tactics.

The statement confirmed that the YPG will back the Peshmerga forces in the face of the ISIL groups, showing its full readiness to send experienced specialists and military personnel units “to support and protect our people and stand united to defeat the new invaders”.
