Fresh surge of violence hit Syrian coastal Latakia

Damascus, Syria – Clashes broke out between pro-Assad military forces and opposition fighters of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in the western countryside of the coastal city of Latakia on Saturday. Dozens were reported dead from both sides.

Talking to ARA News, Suleiman al-Bakri, civil rights activist based in the city of Latakia, said: “The regime-rebels clashes erupted in the vicinity of Qimat 45 (the 45 Peak), as well as in the vicinity of the Chalma peak area where the pro-regime forces are stationed”.

Meanwhile, the pro-Assad warplanes bombarded the vicinity of the clashes area with rockets and heavy machine guns.

“The exact number of casualties is not confirmed yet, but dozens of bodies were seen in the clashes location,” al-Bakri said.

Local sources also reported that one civilian was seriously wounded in the village of Atera in Latakia countryside amid aerial bombardment by the Syrian air force.
