Hasaka, Syria – The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’s (ISIL) militants executed on Thursday forty civilians in the Yezidi village of Tileliya in the countryside of Sere Kaniye city, in Hasaka province, northeast of Syria.

Speaking to ARA News from Sere Kaniye, civil activist Ahmad Khalil said: “On Thursday dawn, militants of ISIL group attacked the village of Tileliya, where Yezidis constitute a majority, and executed forty civilians, mostly children and women. Many were also injured and moved to Sere Kaniye/Ras al-Ain hospital.”

ISIL militants were able to advance towards the village amid the absence of the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) –who used to control Tileliya.

On Wednesday, fierce clashes erupted between the YPG and ISIL group in the village of Rawiya (near Tilelya), during which 25 ISIL militants were reported dead while 15 YPG fighters were killed. The clashes ended up with a full control of the Kurdish YPG forces. However, the security vacuum in Tileliya village gave the opportunity to some ISIL militants to enter the village and commit a massacre against civilians there on Thursday.

The Yezidi minority in northeastern Syria was exposed to similar attacks in August 2013, when Islmist militants launched crackdown against several Yezidi villages, killing dozens and forcing displacement of hundreds of others.

Meanwhile, local sources reported that ISIL launched a car bomb attack on Thursday evening in Themad village in the western environs of Sere Kaniye, killing several civilians.
