Hasakah, Syria – The Syrian northeastern province of Hasakah is well known for agricultural activity and the diversity of crops planted there. However, harvesting, this year, started with many hardships such as lack of empty bags and fuel as well as transportation difficulties and fear of fires frequently occur this time of year.

The ministry of agriculture, linked to the Syrian regime, estimates Hasakah’s barley crop production of this year to be 430 thousand tons, while the wheat production is 715 thousand tons.

Ahmad Abbas, a farmer from Derik city in Hasakah province, told ARA News “We had problems from the very beginning of this season due to the lack of spring fertilizers and fuel as well as high costs and scarcity of agricultural necessities in the region.”

Egid Khalaf, one of the interlocutors interviewed by ARA News, said: “Sackcloth bags are not available as merchants forestall them then sell them higher than last year. The price of one bag is about 175 Syrian Liras.”

Delbrin Haji, one of the region’s farmers, told ARA News “Many obstacles face harvesting this year, such as security situations under which the owners of the mowing machines are attacked on the roads by armed groups.”

Haji wishes to continue harvesting with no more problems, as most of Hasaka’s citizens are dependent on agriculture for living.

Rashed Ahmad, a resident of Qamishli city in Hasakah province, appealed at the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and its armed forces (which are in control over several Kurdish areas in the region) to provide the farmers with fuel necessary for mowing and other agricultural machinery.

“Despite the functional oil refineries, there is a lack of fuel,” Ahmad argued, accusing the PYD of seizing the means of life in the region.
