Deir ez-Zor, Syria– Al-Qaeda splinter group of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) executed on Wednesday 20 civilians in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor, east of Syria, on charges of “having family members who fight in the ranks of the Jabhat al-Nusra, the Islamic Front and Free Syrian Army (FSA)” −which have been fighting against ISIL in different areas of Aleppo, Raqqa, Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor provinces.

Fayiz Abdul-Aziz, an activist based in Deir ez-Zor city, told ARA News that ISIL members had arrested hundreds of civilians in several villages of Deir al-Zor, including Egedat, al-Sabha, al-Dahla and Jideed Baggara.

“The ISIL had arrested them on charges of having family members who fight in the ranks of the rival opposition groups of FSA, the Islamic Front and Jabhat al-Nusra, before executing 20 of them,” Abdul-Aziz said.

Meanwhile, clashes occurred between ISIL militants and the opposition fighters (FSA, Jabhat al-Nusra, and the Islamic Front) in the village of al-Tabiya in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor on Wednesday evening. The clashes ended up with the control of ISIL militants over the village after forcing the withdrawal of the opposition forces.

“More than 20 members of the al-Nusra Front, the Islamic Front and FSA fighters were killed during the clashes on Wednesday, while several ISIL militants were reported dead and injured, but the exact number is still unknown,” activist Abdul-Aziz said.

Notably, these clashes occurred after the ISIL brought huge reinforcements to the region, which helped the group to impose its control over a number of villages in the eastern and northern countrysides of Deir ez-Zor, amid the withdrawal of the rival opposition groups after five months of conflict against ISIL.
