Qamishli, Syria– On Saturday, residents of Mamal al-Ghaz area near Shaddadi town, in the southern countryside of Hasaka city, found a mass grave of bodies of 15 civilians from the area.

Local sources told ARA News that the bodies buried in the mass grave belonged to civilians who were arrested by Jabhat al-Nusra earlier as the group controlled Mamal al-Ghaz area, 15 km south of Shaddadi town. Al-Nusra fighters withdrew from the city after clashes with members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

“Fighters of Jabhat al-Nusra executed the detainees on charges of spying on behalf of Assad regime. The dead bodies were handcuffed and blindfolded,” the sources said.

Mohammed al-Ahmad, media activist based in Shaddadi, told ARA News that calmness prevailed in the city after the ISIL –which is currently in power in the area– issued a law prohibiting the residents from carrying arms.

“ISIL has also announced the establishment of an Islamic administration to provide services in Shaddadi town, saying that the group (ISIL) will pay salaries to the employees in the newly established administration, in the shadow of absence of financial support from the governorate council of Hasaka,” al-Ahmad said.

According to al-Ahmad, the ISIL is working on supplying the area with electric current from Raqqa city, and the group has paid an amount of 50.000 SP to the electricity workers in order to motivate them to work.

Hasaka province saw escalating violence in the recent weeks. Rebels of the Islamic Front and Jabhat al-Nusra launched attacks against ISIL strongholds in the area. Sources reported that negotiations are being held between the conflicting Islamist parties to end the military operations in Syria’s northeastern areas, mainly in Hasaka’s surroundings.
