A 16 year-old Syrian Kurdish refugee girl gang-raped in Erbil

Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan− A 16 year-old Syrian Kurdish refugee girl was reportedly gang-raped on Monday evening in Erbil, the capital city of the Iraqi Kurdistan.

The incident comes as first of its kind in the Kurdistan Region. 

According to reports, a group of seven young men from the Iraqi kidnapped the 16 year-old girl while she was on her way back from work around 7 p.m. The group used a car to take the victim outside the city of Erbil where they alternately raped her.

The victim was taken immediately to the Asaysh center −police force of the Kurdistan Region− after seeking help from a nearby house, where she was provided with clothes to wear as she was left naked alone, the victim reportedly said. 

The 16 year-old girl resorted to the Iraqi Kurdistan with her family nearly one year ago looking for refuge, after escaping her home town of Kobane, northern the war-torn Syria.  

Syrian activist Dijwar Khelil, based in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, told ARA News that the incident is deemed a shocking violation to the rights of the Syrian Kurdish refugees the Iraqi Kurdistan.

“The concerned authorities in the Region have to bear their responsibilities and identify the offenders,” Khelil said. “Those criminals must be prosecuted in public to guarantee that such a horrific incident would never happen again in the future.”

As the number of the Syrian refugees in the Iraqi Kurdistan rose to more than 200.000, this incident came to shed more light on the suffering of the refugees and the poor conditions of the refugee camps which lack basic supplies, according to refugee families in the Region
